my new year’s resolutions [minimalist challenge item #315]

[item] Envelopes, lots of them

[purchase info] Purchased at an office supply store

[time in my possession] Approximately 6 years

[last used] Never

[difficulty level in getting rid of it] Easy

[destination] Freecycle

[replacement item] None

[info] I can’t tell you the last time I mailed anything.  I had these to sell some of my books on eBay.  So what are my new year’s resolutions?  Well, honestly, I don’t really have any.  Catchy title though, hey?  I don’t wait until the first of the year to do things I should be doing all year long.  I just start them in the middle of the year.  My no retail shopping challenge started in May.  This downsizing challenge started in February.

Make your new year’s resolution to not make and new year’s resolutions.  Instead, plan to do things throughout the year that need to be done.  Don’t wait to loose weight, clean out your house, or better yet, don’t wait to make that radical life change you’ve been pondering for a long time.  At the risk of sounding like a shoe company, just do it.  Research anything that’s a big change to make sure it’s the right thing for you to do.  Then do it.  Now.  No, I mean right now.  Get off the computer and go take that first step.

this item was the kick in the pants I needed… [minimalist challenge item #314]

[item] Ikea full size mattress

[purchase info] Purchased at Ikea in the “as is” section

[time in my possession] Approximately 8 months

[last used] A couple of months ago

[difficulty level in getting rid of it] Easy

[destination] Freecycle

[replacement item] We got a full size mattress from a friend of ours.

[info] So, this is a “long” story that I’m not going to tell right now, however I will give you a teaser…

I listed this mattress on Freecycle and quickly got an email from someone wanting it.  As it turns out, I knew these awesome people from church.  This mattress is for one of their kids moving into a “big girl” bed.  In the process of them picking up the mattress, I realized something else I needed to downsize.  But that part is the rest of the story that is still in the works.  I promise to share soon…

the excess depletion project [minimalist challenge item #313]

[item] Small table lamp

[purchase info] Given to me by some good friends

[time in my possession] Approximately a year?

[last used] A month ago in my kitchen

[difficulty level in getting rid of it] Easy

[destination] Freecycle

[replacement item] None, I moved a lamp from another spot in my house.

[info] I got this from my friends Jason and Carrie.  That’s important because they are now doing their own version of a minimalist project.  You can read about the Excess Depletion Project on their blog at blessedorexcess.blogspot.com.

a good deal is sometimes the one you leave at the store [minimalist challenge item #312]

[item] 3 round glass vases

[purchase info] Purchased at a thrift store

[time in my possession] Approximately 1.5 years

[last used] Never

[difficulty level in getting rid of it] Kinda easy

[destination] Freecycle

[replacement item] None

[info] I had lots of ideas for things I could do with these, but I just didn’t have a place for them.  I bought them because of the possibilities, yet if there’s no place to put them and no time to work on them, what’s the purpose?  A good deal is one that is left at the store if it’s not something you have room for.

it was a mistake, I didn’t mean to get rid of it [minimalist challenge item #311]

[item] 2 winter coats

[purchase info] Purchased one new and one at a thrift store

[time in my possession] Approximately 6 years on the one in the photo, one year on the other one

[last used] The white one, 2 years, the blue one, a little over a month ago

[difficulty level in getting rid of it] Easy

[destination] projectwarm.us

[replacement item] 1 brown coat to replace the blue one.

[info] I gave the white one away.  No matter how many times I had it cleaned, it just never looked too good.  The blue one is not pictured for a reason.  While I was in my garage with a few other people, sorting coats to be given to the homeless, I got hot and took off my coat.  Well, needless to say, it got bagged up with the other coats.  It was my only coat.  I had donated the rest of them to the homeless.  After a couple of weeks without a coat, I found one for $20 at Plato’s Closet.

[destination] Trash.  Is there an alternative?

[replacement item] None

[info] Merry Christmas!!!!  Yes, I know.  These have been sitting around since Easter.  They’re some hard, nasty peeps now.  So why did I keep them all this time?  Well, there is a story behind that…

After creating a stop motion video with my Peeps, I placed them in a plastic bag, in hopes I could find something to do with them.  I touched all of them while making the video, so clearly nobody wanted to eat them.  Here’s the video…  Continue reading
